Molly Lowe: Sorry, Excuse Me, Thank You

76 Grand Street
New York, NYSorry, Excuse Me, Thank You was Molly Lowe’s first solo exhibition in New York. In the gallery’s main space, Lowe suspended over 100 soft sculptures from the ceiling, re-imagining the experience of moving through a sculpture garden, obstacle course, meat market, and crowded subway. In this alternate world, figures are transformed into fragmented, abstract blob shapes vaguely defined by hand-painted skin, bristly hair, and the ambient beeps of invisible gadgets. As viewers navigated the maze, the anthropomorphic forms were activated by unavoidable brush-bys and nudges.
The installation blurs the boundaries between personal and public space, and the rituals of etiquette and gaze that exist on the streets as well as in the gallery. Lowe continues her exploration of the absurd, fragmented, and often isolating conditions of the human experience in contemporary culture.
