Salvador Andrade Arévalo: Enraizado / Rooted, 2023
-
Overview
JPMorgan Chase Global HQ, New York, NY
Salvador Andrade’s work is a celebration of the intergenerational knowledge found within migrant laborer communities in the US that continue to thrive and reinvent themselves. Andrade’s work draws potency from ancestral influences connected to nature, plants, labor, syncretic belief systems, and vernacular traditions. Visually, this translates to artwork that showcases flowers and plastics—materials that his family members utilize in their day-to-day labor through farming, landscaping, or construction. Growing up around labor sites has forced Salvador to acknowledge that the exploitation of plants and plastics has funneled his family toward the laborer class for over 100 years. The work was commissioned by JPMorgan Chase and is on display as part of City Canvas, an initiative of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Curated by Suzanne Geiss with Seven Willow Collaborative.
